Shoe For Bush

bush-ducks-shoe

The journalist stood up but instead of asking a question he just threw both of his shoes in quick succession to the US president who successfully evaded both.
According to reports, the footwear-hurler was was television reporter Munthar Zaidar of Al Baghdadia TV. Zaidar had covered events in Sadr City extensively and had lost several relatives in the conflict. He was also recently kidnapped and tortured in a three-day ordeal.

If you watch CNN or BBC, they have put a fantastic spin on the story, it goes something like this: “Sure the image of someone throwing a shoe at Bush is bad but the fact that the man lived to tell the tale shows just how free Iraq is right now.

Great.

The BBC interviewed people on the ground and the few Iraqis they met agreed with the shoe thrower in wanting Bush and the Americans out of their country.

Apparently the white house doesn’t think the image will seriously damage Bush’s legacy.

What legacy?

The Falling Malaysian Press Freedom Index

This is has got to be another severe dent to free press! Malaysia has slipped to its lowest ranking ever in the Reporters Sans Frontieres (RSF) press freedom index to the 132nd position in 2008 from 124th position last year. How about that! In the day when a journalist can get arrested for her own security? Its not surprising that our position is slipping by the day.

If you are wondering why people nowdays opt to online resources for their daily dose of updates and even to bloggers which some quaters claim to be nothing but mere lies?! Well here’s your answer!!

The press freedom index clearly shows that our press are not free to report what they want too and has got some control mechanism in place to ensure that the people don’t necessarily get what really happened maybe?

Sad piece of stat for Malaysia! Anyway hopefully someday this stat improves for the sake of press freedom and we get news reported the way it actually happened.

Keadilan Press Release :Badawi: Wading back from the Rubicon

Thank God, Theresa Kok has been released from the ISA. The Badawi administration’s lame excuse of not finding any reason to detain her further sounds as ludicrous as Tan Hoon Cheng’s detention is for her protection. Unfortunately, Raja Petra is still detained. Since the crack down began last week, mosques, churches, temples, places of worship and all other places where the public congregate, have seen vigils and prayers for the three detainees and for our country. All religions have in the course of their development been victims of oppression. They are therefore familiar with OPPRESSION and are quick to recognize   one when it happens. But there is a word that is more appropriate than oppression to describe the sinful act of the Badawi administration in the misuse of the ISA, it is TYRANNY! [Read more...]
