Deepavali, How Different

I was listening to a talk on BFM sometime last week on the history, legends, traditions and celebration of the Festival of Lights, Deepavali. It was a very insightful conversation giving a lot of info about the significance behind the festival and the way it is celebrated here in Malaysia and other parts of the world.

Growing up i celebrated the festival very differently as compared to the way it is celebrated today and for me, we have changed in the name of modernization . More of a convenient excuse for me.

Knowing why things are done in certain way definitely gives it more significant and creates a genuine need to preserve these practices before it gets lost and forgotten. I dont think there is a right or wrong way but merely preference of how you like to practise it.

Hopefully I can go back to basics and at least practise what i feel it’s the way I like to do it.

Happy Deepavali and check out the podcast below  [Read more...]

Didnt expect to see Metacafe up there together with the most visited sites! And its funny how Malaysiakini is “Mainstream Media” now ;)

Suarakami Concert : Nelly Drama

Last night, 17th of September was the Suarakami Concert which was held at Stadium Merdeka. This concert which featured in the infamous Malaysian Boy song amongst a host of local and International artist. There was an eventful concert indeed with the PM making a surprise visit from a invitation on twitter. One piece of drama that which was very interesting was with Nelly. The international artist made some headlines with his twitter remarks which stirred things up. It all started with this one :

Nelly was obviously not aware of Malaysians and did not do his home work prior to coming to Malaysia.

Happy Malaysia Day!

Malaysia Day is held on September 16 every year to commemorate the establishment of the Malaysian federation on the same date in 1963. It marked the joining together of Malaya, North Borneo, Sarawak, and Singapore to form Malaysia. The formation of the new federation was planned to occur on June 1, 1963, but was later postponed to August 31, 1963, in order to coincide with the sixth Hari Merdeka.

Several issues related to the Indonesian and the Filipino objection to the formation of Malaysia delayed the declaration to September 16 of the same year. The postponement was also done to allow the United Nations team time to conduct referendums in North Borneo (now Sabah) and Sarawak regarding the two states participation in a new federation.

A landmark day in our history which didn’t have much recognition till recently when it was declared a public holiday and many started talking and finding out more about this bit of history.

Singapore left Malaysia 2 years later due to a rocky relationship due to differences between the island state and the Malaysian leaders. Singapore got their Independence on 9 August 1965.

It makes me wonder if we would have been in a totally different position that we are in today if Singapore was still part of Malaysia, my gut feeling tells me we would have been a much more progressive nation but that’s only my opinion.

Selamat Hari Malaysia!
