Mobile Number Portability

Mobile phone users can now enjoy the freedom of switching network service providers without having to forego their original phone number (including the prefix). I remember a friend of mine telling me about 3-4years ago that this is something that is already available in America and some European countries and it was pitched to a few mobile phone companies but it fell flat on its face at that time.

Its has been taken seriously since and now users have got the option of moving providers without loosing their mobile phone numbers. This is great news for the consumer who can now opt to go for a provider that provides maximum according to the individual usage.

There will be a fee of RM25 for each change. The service starts this Friday for pre-paid users and subsequently for post paid users in 2weeks time. The service will go 100% by sometime in October

WiMax Roll’s Out Today!

The long anticipated WiMax service under wireless KL starts Today!! Packet One (P1), will officially roll out its services today, at monthly rates that are expected to range from RM60 for 400Kbps to over RM100 for its highest speed of 2.4Mbps.

P1 is one of the 4 licensee’s of Wimax together with REDtone International Bhd, YTL e-Solutions Bhd and Asiaspace Dotcom Sdn Bhd.

This is a long over due competition to streamyx which has been the monopoly in the market for way too long with its quite frankly below par services.

Fuel Rebate Claim

With the price increase of fuel, the government came up with a new subsidy mechanism that requires those who own a car to claim this rebate via the Post Office. Since this came in place, post offices have been filled to the brim and sometimes waiting for your turn can be pretty long!

To address this very issue,Pos Malaysia Berhad now allows collection of fuel rebates through its online portal at Pos Online. All you need to do is sign up for a Pos Online account and login with your username and password. Then go to Cash Rebate Online and click on Cash Rebate. Key in your number plate and the other information required. You can then select either Money Order or Bank Account Deposit as your mode of payment.

For the Money Order option, a Money Order will be posted to your registered address within 7 working days of the online transaction. For the Bank Account deposit option, your money will be credited directly into your bank account within 3 working days. For those who renewed their road tax before it expires, you can only perform the rebate transaction online 3 days after the road tax renewal. If you experience trouble with the system, give 1-300-300-300 a ring.

Finally a more practical system for those who really dont have the time during working hours to endure the headache of a que at the Post Office.

Soccer Heroes - R.Arumugam

Spiderman

Spiderman

Famously known as Spiderman, R Arumugan is easily a household name when it comes to Malaysian football. He was born on January 31, 1953 in Port Klang he was one of those players who were born to play the game. He made his debut into football at the age of 18 representing Selangor.

Representing Selangor from 1972 to 1988, he helped the time to go on and win the Malaysia Cup eight times.

The goalkeeper earned his first cap when he represented the Malaysia national football team in 1973 for the World Cup qualifying round matches in Seoul, South Korea. He is also a bronze medalist for the Asian games in Tehran in 1974. Arumugam was also part of the Malaysian team that qualified for the 1980 Moscow Olympics however the team boycotted that golden opportunity.

He was known to be part of the spine of the team together with Mokthar Dahari and Soh Chin Aun, He agility was second to none and his commanding presence at the goal was a constant fear to team mates and opponents. From his performances it clearly showed like his team mates the pride in wearing the national colours and playing every match like it were a cup finals.

Arumugam passed away on the 18th of December  1988 in a car accident on the federal highway at the age of 35. This news shocked the entire football fraternity and fans. Till today most goalkeepers in this region set Spiderman as a benchmark that they would like to emulate.

It was that era when players were chosen on merit of their performances. All of them who wore the national colours went out to make the nation proud. If only the current crop had 50% of that!!

Soccer Heroes - Soh Chin Aun

Tauke was born at Alor Gajah, Malacca on the 28th of July 1950. He is married to Datin Patricia Lee Chwee Siang and has 2 children Bee Hin and Chuan Tye. Something you didn’t know about tauke is the actual spelling of his name is Soh Chin Ann. He started his carrier representing Selangor from 1970-1980 and subsequently went on to represent his home state of Malacca from 1981till1983. He wore the national colours throughout his carrier from 1970 till 1983 earning him 200 caps.

Tauke was part of all the glory years when Malaysia used to come on field with pride and honour and win games for the nation at any cost. He was also known as ‘god of war’ because of his commanding presence in the centre of defence and that also earned him the captain’s armband for the qualifying team to the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games.

2008 China Olympics torch run

These days tauke is the the chairman of the referees’ committee on 13 March 2007 and is actively involved with the Football Association of Malaysia(FAM). He was featured as one of the many 2008 China Olympics torch bearers run for Malaysia. I personally feel that tauke should simply teach all national players what the legendary team believed in, what made them so special. Malaysian national players should try to emulate Soh Chin Aun and his colleagues not the John Terry’s and Christiano Ronaldo’s.

Hopefully one day i get a chance to meet him and shake his hand because that is what a true national sports man is all about!

Maxis to distribute iPhone

Its finally coming to Malaysia! The iPhone has been the talk of the town from the time it was first launched and it never made its way to our shores. Every time someone showed off their brand new iPhone with the fancy finger maneuvers it was from either America or Hong Kong or UK. The phones had to be cracked because it wouldn’t work with our local network. A friend told me that he couldn’t plug it onto his computer while it was online because it apparently would lock the phone again.

That pretty much explains why Malaysia wasnt a favourite destination for Apple to bring the iphone too. Then they launched the iphone 3G! This one got me excited, its half the price and twice as fast!! Now that’s something i would consider!! In the latest news, Maxis will be introducing the iPhone 3G for below RM1,000.

Maxis could not comment on when the iPhone will be available yet as Apple does not have a Asian distribution policy yet. It be interesting to see the price point and how it is going to bundled with the maxis packages before being offered to the consumer! Thank god im a maxis user :)
