Google’s Fiber Experiment

Friday, February 12th, 2010

If you havent heard yet, Google is planning to build experimental ultra high-speed broadband networks in a small number of trial locations across the United States to make the Internet better and faster.

Apparently its a small no that they are targetting (even though 500,000 households is not exactly a tiny number) but you can nominate your community to be part of this project.

Google, pls come to Malaysia! We need you!! :S

Imagine 1GB Internet Speed

Friday, November 6th, 2009

Internet speed and cost is purely sickening. I was in Singapore recently and i was looking at the advertisements of some providers offering 15MB speed connections for under $7o then i see this one. People in Hong Kong will be enjoying 100Mbps Internet speed at 50% of its original price. All they have to do is introduce a friend, and both of them get the half price benefit, paying only USD$13 a month each. Before you go ,no way they will be getting that kinda speeds, They’re guaranteed at least 80% of the advertised speed!

Now the amusing part :

William Yeung, Chief Executive Officer of HKBN noted that at least 32% of Internet users in Hong Kong suffer from broadband speeds below 10Mbps, and the Hong Kong special administrative region of the People’s Republic of China lags behind Korea and Japan in terms of fiber to the home service, something Yeung would like to see changed.

When 10Mb is considered suffering, they have no clue what we Malaysians suffer from! :) I hope the day would come when we in Malaysia too start enjoying such speeds at affordable rates. Till then we can just hope……

Firefox has more than 1Bil Downloads!

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

firefox_1_billion_downloadsMy favorite internet browser Mozilla Firefox has more than 1billion downloads! How about that! Its a amazing feat. I was following the Firefox Counter on twitter and they have since made it! In conjunction with this feat, they have launched the 1Bil+You site which gives you some interesting site of what 1bil means!

What does 1Billion mean?

  • A bowl big enough to fit one billion goldfish would be as big as a stadium
  • One billion stacked coins would reach nearly 1,000 miles high.
  • One billion centimeters is approximately the distance from Chicago to Tokyo
  • One billion seconds is roughly 31.7 years
  • One billion kilograms is equal to the weight of 250,000 elephants
  • One billion credit cards weigh as much as fifty-two blue whales

Congrats Firefox and im sure more and more is on its way to replace the blood sucking market leader :)

History of the Internet

300px-internet_map_1024

Ever wondered how and when the Internet started? First of all, what is the Internet?

The Internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks that interchange data by packet switching using the standardized Internet Protocol Suite (TCP/IP). It is a “network of networks” that consists of millions of private and public, academic, business, and government networks of local to global scope that are linked by copper wires, fiber-optic cables, wireless connections, and other technologies. – Wikipedia

It started in 1946 by a comic science-fiction story, A Logic Named Joe, by Murray Leinster laid out the Internet and many of its strengths and weaknesses. However, it took more than a decade before reality began to catch up with this vision. In 1957 things started becoming a reality and the rest was history!

Below is a good video about the internet (more…)

50Mbps Broadband

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

virgin-50mbps-modem1

While you are complaining how it takes you a few days to download a movie, The virgin group have launced a 50mbps broadband speed!! There will be no download limits and no traffic management.

Now how much does it cost??

£51 per month for non-Virgin phone users and a more reasonable £35 for those that take a phone line [approximately £11 per month].

Yea before you start converting that to your currency, look at it as dollar for dollar. If you earn RM10,000 a month, someone in UK earns 1000 pounds. And if you look at it that way, for the money i am paying now i should be on a 100mbps line eh?

Do you think you will ever get to enjoy such speeds in this lifetime at a affordable rate??

Im not tooooooooooooo sure about that! What are your thoughts?
