Nomination Day : Anwar Meets Supporters

Anwar Ibrahim meets up too 100,000 supporters at Permatang Pauh on nomination day on video.

Arif Shah Omar Shah vs Anwar Ibrahim

BN have announced its candidate to take on Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim for the permatang pauh seat in the upcoming by-eletions on the 26th of Aug 08. This weekend Permatang Pauh sets to see a massive wave of light and dark blue hitting its town with the nomination on the 16th of August 08.

Arif Shah, the Penang State Assembly member for Seberang Jaya. He is a Mandarin speaker and a graduate of Nanyang University in Singapore.

Najib later told reporters that Arif Shah was picked because he had successfully defended the Seberang Jaya seat in the last general election, which was an exception when almost all other Umno candidates had tumbled.

Its ironic that the candidate was talking about Permatang Pauh needing a hardworking mp for the seat and the fact that he is the Seberang Jaya assembly men would mean if he wins, he would be a shared resource.

The stage is stage and let the battle begin!

Menteri Besar’s Bad Idea

The Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim has triggered a outburst amongst the Malays in Selangor in when he suggested that UITM opens it doors to a 10% allocation to Non-Bumiputera’s to enter the University. The 10% would consist of the “other races” and foreign students. His reason for the suggestion , this would raise the education quality as well as instill the spirit of competition among students at the UiTM.

Repercutions?

He was in for a rude shock yesterday morning when thousands of UiTM students marched to his office in Shah Alam to protest the idea.

Banners such as “UiTM Hak Bumputera Selamanya” (UiTM will forever belong to Bumiputras), “Selamatkan UiTM” (Save UiTM), “We are not racists, we are just activists protecting our rights” and “10% = 12,000 non-Bumi — Malays’ and Bumis’ rights are being denied” were displayed during the students’ march, allegedly with the approval of the university administration.

Its gone so far till the Prime Minister has come out and slammed the idea by saying that

“”He has no power to do that. Matters related to (student) intakes is under the jurisdiction of higher educational institutions”

You can understand that we Malaysians are not used to changes or anything that could take us out of our comfort zones but really, we all know that its simply a suggestion that came our of good intent.

Don’t we ever beleive in talking before re-acting?
