Soccer Heroes – Soh Chin Aun

Soh Chin Aun is another member of the legendary Malaysian team that made every opponent that toke on the Malaysian team back in the 70′s worried. The Malacca born defender was a regular in the national setup which incluced the likes of Mokhtar Dahari,R Arumugam, defenders Santokh Singh, midfielders Reduan Abadullah ,Shukor Salleh and Isa Bakar.

Tauke was part of all the glory years when Malaysia used to come on field with pride and honour and win games for the nation at any cost. He was also known as ‘god of war’ because of his commanding presence in the centre of defence and that also earned him the captain’s armband for the qualifying team to the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games.

These days tauke is the the chairman of the referees’ committee on 13 March 2007 and is actively involved with the Football Association of Malaysia(FAM). He was featured as one of the many 2008 China Olympics torch bearers run for Malaysia. I personally feel that tauke should simply teach all national players what the legendary team believed in, what made them so special. Malaysian national players should try to emulate Soh Chin Aun and his colleagues not the John Terry’s and Christiano Ronaldo’s.

Hopefully one day i get a chance to meet him and shake his hand because that is what a true national sports man is all about!

Soccer Heroes – Mokhtar Dahari

The current Malaysian football scene is nothing short of rubbish, were sitting something like 160th position in the FIFA world ranking(there are about 190 seeded countries) . The nation would claim that football is our no 1 sport despite the lousy condition of the national team. This is probably because its our most watched sport(English Premier League’s,EURO,World Cups etc) . Take a walk at the streets, you’ll see more Everton shirts than a Malaysian national team shirt(don’t get me started on the Man U’s and Liverpool’s) .What do we watch since we have a team that suffer to beat countries like India which playing the marbles is above football in their favorite sports list.

It never has been always this bad, at one point Malaysia was considered to be a Asian powerhouse. At that time there weren’t any professional players. The players all had full time jobs and played football simply because they loved it and every time they put on the national shirt, it was a matter of pride!!

One of the stars of yesterday was Mokthar Dahari .He made his national debut at the age of 19 and represented Selangor for most of his career where he went on to win the Malaysia cup 10 times.

SuperMokth as he was famously known was part of a powerful Malaysian team which was also represented by goalkeeper R Arumugam, defenders Santokh Singh and Soh Chin Aun, midfielders Reduan Abadullah and Shukor Salleh and Mokhtar’s partner upfront Isa Bakar.

During the 70′s Malaysia team beat Arsenal & England team where he scored a spectacular goal, dribbling it from the middle to score at the other end.

He was blessed with such skills but at the age of 37,Supermokth passed away of muscular dystrophy on 11 July 1991. Tt here have been all sorts of rumors about how he passed on but fact was that he was sick.

Since then Malaysia have never had a team which came close to the passion, drive and hunger to emulate the success of the 70′s national team. We have a bunch of spoil professionals with access to such high tech training methods and programs to ensure they are on top of their game but for some reason, they prefer the nasi lemak and night life.

I hope someday, something happens and our local football take a drastic change for the sake of the nation..I hope i get the opportunity someday to shake the hands of these stars who made us proud!

Vote on the poll on the sidebar to choose why our football has become so poor.

Horror Tackle

If you are a football fan the last thing you want to see is a horror tackle! Over the last weekend, arsenal striker Eduardo got exactly that..Birmingham’s Martin Taylor went flying into Eduardo’s ankle and effective breaking it into a few bits! Its horryfying in my view. It was so bad the channel didn’t even show repeats of the tackle. Managed to get some images for those of you interested in seeing the images. Its not exactly pretty so if your interested to see the pictures . Click below

Malaysian Football Wining Formula?

In a attempt to resurrect the faith of the national football team, The FA of Malaysia have taken some steps in improving the quality of the team. This attempt was triggered by the new FAM deputy president, Khairy Jamaluddin.Below are the steps that will be taken this time

  • Ex Liverpool and Welsh international Ian Rush to will be conducting special clinics for the national forwards and those from the state teams
  • National coach ,Satianathan would come under the direct charge of United’s assistant coach Carlos Quierez in a 2 week attachment with Manchester United
  • National players will be going on attachments with European top clubs

When i first saw these things it looked pretty interesting. My questions are :

  1. Is the Ian Rush a one off thing and will there be any follow through to this?
  2. Is 2 weeks enough to get the National manager to learn anything at all?
  3. National players also going to have short stints with these top clubs?

We all know the current state of the national team, so where is the emphasis on grass root level? From the looks of it, more money spent and as usual we are going to be guilty of lack of follow through and tax payers money down the drain.Sounds like a short term erection more then a long term resurrection

What you think?
