WWF Turtle Idol

Have voted yet?? WWF needs your help to choose a name for the hawksbill turtle that has been fitted with the satellite transmitter. Why are is this turtle fitted with the transmitter?

To establish the migration route and feeding ground of the hawksbills to facilitate the protection of their habitat and to gather as much information of the behavioral patterns of these turtles to help in their conservation work to name a few.You can read all about it on the WWF Site

How to vote?

SMS WWF <space> the number of your favourite turtle name <space> your full name <space> e-mail address, to 39398 between 20 October - 31 December 2007.

And while you vote you will be doing your bit by contributing RM 3 for each sms.Thats not all, all votes will automatically qualify for a lucky draw, which will entitle three lucky winners to hampers comprising WWF merchandise, including our popular classic T-shirts and bags!

All these funds will be channeled towards the conservation work that is being done in Melaka so its a great initiative!

The turtle idols are :

  1. Digging Dayang (After nesting, turtles perform a ritual called “sand-bathing” where they thrust sand over their backs with their front flippers to bury their eggs. Dayang means “young lady” in Bahasa Malaysia.)
  2. Freedom Flipper (During our first encounter with this turtle that was eventually fitted with a transmitter, we freed her from a rope tightly lassoed around her left front flipper.)
  3. Mama Kesuma (Attractive mother or ‘Hot Mama’ :-) )
  4. Nyonya Aida (Nyonya: a lady from the Straits Chinese community, for which Melaka is famous; Aida: a returning visitor.)
  5. Swimming Shelly (Even with the heavy shells on their backs, marine turtles are strong swimmers, cruising vast distances from their nesting habitats to their foraging grounds.)

Make sure you log onto the WWF Site and find out more about the Turtle Idol efforts and all other WWF work!
