World Aids Day

1st of Dec 2008 is the World AIDS DAY. Lately there hasn’t been too much hype about AIDS compared to a few years ago when it was constantly being spoken about. AIDS is still a serious problem and there is still no cure for it however there is treatment that can keep it under control.

Personally i don’t know anyone that has AIDS but i have learnt that you must treat them with respect and always remember that it can happen to anyone including YOU!

Here is something i never knew, Do you know if HIV and AIDS are the same thing??

No. When someone is described as living with HIV, they have the HIV virus in their body. A person is considered to have developed AIDS when the immune system is so weak it can no longer fight off a range of diseases with which it would normally cope.

Do you know why the red ribbon is used for AIDS and what the other colors are for the different causes??

The red ribbon is the international symbol of HIV/AIDS awareness. It was brought to life by a group of New York City artists called Visual AIDS. The artists sought to create an image, which would be simple yet bold – able to make an impact wherever it was seen. Red was chosen to symbolize blood and danger. The tails of the ribbon pointing down was chosen to symbolize life flowing away.

The tremendous success of the red ribbon has seen the concept borrowed by many other organizations — from breast cancer awareness (pink ribbon) to suicide prevention (yellow ribbon).

You can get onto the World AIDS DAY website for more details or check out Marina Mahathir’s blog for more on what is being done locally
