Litter-Bugs are like culture for Malaysians. How many times have you seen a piece of tissue flying out of the car in front of you. Or a can being thrown to the side of the road after being consumed? There was a article in the papers of how DBKL was hitting out at party goers who messed up the streets after a massive Christmas Eve celebration.
DBKL very rightly pointed out that it was every-one’s right to party and have a good time moreover its the holiday season and those who fancy partying will let their hair down and release some steam. But what ever reason, it needs to be done with some sence of responsibility.
Singapore has got a reputation of being a fine city. Why Fine? Well…You cant litter, you cant smoke in many places, you cant eat in the train, you cant be caught dead with a chewing gum and the list goes on and on.Well maybe its time we get ourselves into a fine mode as well!
The timing could not be better! Since the economy is sinking like a ship that hit a tin can.. This is the best time to implement some very strict measures to get the city and nation cleaned up! This is what i think ..
- Those who lost their jobs because of the down turn should be hired on a part time basis to go around looking for these litter-bugs!
- Impose some heavy fines. Since people don’t have money in their pockets, they will be more cautious and hopefully becomes a habit of choosing the trash can instead of the roads!
- Provide a commission scheme for those who work for DBKL in cracking down on litter bugs so they work hard in busting these litter bug!
Having said that, its time for DBKL to do their jobs in equipping the city with more trash cans that are cleaned up on a regular basis. Ensure a proper mechanism is in place to get these litter bugs, a proper appeal system to avoid discrepancies.
Since 2009 looks like a year that most of us will be worrying about the size ouf our pockets, it seems timely to implement some measures like this one to put us as a nation of fine cities
