NESV & Liverpool FC

I have been a Liverpool supporter since 1989, i was barely 10 years old when we got some English Football coverage on the tele and for some reason, me and my mates at that time felt a connection with the team, we watched the likes of Grobbelaar,Alan Hansen ,Steve Staunton, John Barnes, Jan Mølby and Ian Rush to name a few mesmerizing the field with wearing their Candy kit. The team went on to win the Division 1 tittle, the top league in England at that time.

It was not the best of times since, we never won the top prize but had some good teams in the process . Many attempts were made to make that push to the tittle but many failed during the David Moores tenure as chairman. The club was sold to George Gillett and Tom Hicks, who bought the club on 6 February 2007.

It was the darkest period of the club for me. It was a period where the club was owned by 2 American’s who were in to cash in on one of the biggest clubs in England. There were many poor signings, many of which were simply mind boggling! We had some good players who i don’t understand how we let go but I am not surprised if the manager had no choice but to cash in to bring in new possibilities.

With the Gillett and Hicks trying to hold on to the club with dear life, the management team lead by Martin Broughton were looking for potential new suitors . There were 2 potential suitors one of which was NESV, the owners of Boston Red Sox. It was a well calculated decision by the management team who saw NESV as the owners who could bring back the club to its feet, start walking and eventually running away with silverware.

I was skeptical at first, it was another set of American owners but hey.. You should never ever generalize and gauging from what they had pulled off at Boston, it was a very promising deal. Even though the acquisition was not the easiest, it eventually happened.

Liverpool FC had brand new owners – NESV

Since the take over the new owners have been very careful in not making promises , for me they are doing all the right things to stabilize the club. Getting in the right management team, deciding on a plan that will eventually yield the results on the field. Getting in Damien Comolli into the club as Director of Football Strategy. Damien is responsible for bring players like Luka Modrić, Benoit Assou-Ekotto, Heurelho Gomes, David Bentley, Vedran Ćorluka and Roman Pavlyuchenko, Dimitar Berbatov and the Gareth Bale in his previous role in Spurs. He has a eye for true quality and one can expect similar results coming to anfield.

Im optimistic, we may not have the best playing staff but its slowly coming together in on field. Tom Werner , the co-founder of NESV has been installed as the Chairman. Its a sign of intent for me that NESV is very serious in bringing the best talent both off and on the field. I suspect there are going to be many players leaving the club and new faces coming in to complete the equation.

Its been a long time since Liverpool lifted the top English prize but i think that its matter of time. Take a few steps back and look at the bigger picture, Liverpool are in a way better position than many English clubs, there is hardly a debt, owners that are committed to the club.

I don’t know for sure but i hope NESV are the best thing that has happened to the club in a while and soon Liverpool fans can start watching some superb football and the trophies start making their way back to anfield.
