Malaysian Open 2008

20 January, 2008 – 7:00 am

I was at the quarter finals of the Malaysian Open 2008 at Bukit Jalil Stadium on the 18th of January 2008.It was my first experience at any Badminton super series.Got to the stadium with Valcy at 6.30pm and met up with some other friends, about 9 of us went for this tournament all geared up with our Malaysia flag. The crowd was already there and thank god we got ourselves some premium numbered tickets which secured us some superb seats.

Want to know what happen??

The stadium was almost full with the fans all there to spur on the Malaysian shutters. First up was Wong Mew Choo who was up against Japan’s Eriko Hirose. She dropped the first set but the fans went on a shouting spree and she picked up the pieces and went on to win the game 16-21, 23-21, 21-14 .It awesome to see at least one female shuttler challenging for the honours!

Then came out our brightest hope Lee Chong Wei.When you watch these games on tv and then you get the opportunity to watch it live, its totally a different deal. I was very impressed with Chong Wei, he was full of confidence and it felt like I was watching a Ronaldinho of badminton in action!! He was full of trickery with superb defense and killer instincts in killing off every point. He went on to easily beating off Simon Santoso 21-13 21-13.

The doubles pairing off Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah who played in the court right in front of where we were seated and the rookie pairing off Chew Choon Eng- Chan Chong Ming on the court next to them. Both pairs were rather disappointing and their opponents had a easy run in beating them easily. The funny thing was how the fans who were on Tan Fooks back constantly looking on to his soon to be wife Zhang Jiewen from China who was playing on the next court.

The other players who were awesome to watch were the Danish players, their antics during the matches were awesome .The fans were spurred on by this antics so much so there was a guy sitting behind me that was expressing his love for another man by constantly shouting ” Kenneth Jonassen I LOVE YOU” :)

It was a awesome experience but i felt the fans should have all come out with their flags and kept on spurring on the shutters!! We only get world class players coming to our soil to play once a year and we should give them a experience they won’t forget! Our shutters are world champions and we should all go out and give them the support they need!!

It was nice to see people like Rexy Mainaky, Misbun Sidek and the shutlers who we normally only see on tv! I’m surely going to go for more of such tournaments and support the national sportsmen/women :)

  4. Hey! I was just browsing around when I chanced upon your blog. I was there too at L7 during the QFs but my row was Q if I’m not mistaken. The match between Eriko and Mew Choo was awesome and of course most people were constantly having their eyes focused on Zhang Jiewen and Choong Tan Fook. xD
