Malaysia Day falls on the 16th of September every year. This is the day that Malaysia was formed as a nation with Malaya,Sabah,Sarawak and Singapore came together to form a single nation..Malaysia.
In my books its a landmark day which formed what we are called today which unfortunately is not a public holiday or celebrated for that matter.
Singapore later gained Independence on the 9th of August 1965 after Malaysia Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman decided upon the secession of Singapore from the Federation.
Excepts from Wiki :
On that day, a tearful Lee Kuan Yew announced that Singapore was a sovereign, independent nation and assumed the role of prime minister of the new nation. His speech included this quote: “For me, it is a moment of anguish. All my life, my whole adult life, I have believed in merger and unity of the two territories.” Hence, Singapore became the only country in the history of the modern world to gain independence against its own will.
The former prime minister of Singapore Lee Kuan Yew was devastated that Singapore being a part of Malaysia never really toke off but he got his act together and started his mission of building a nation which stands as a Asian power house today.
Malaysia however is still years behind the island nation which we didn’t want to be a part off.
In my personal view, Malaysia Day is a landmark day that we should celebrate as the day our nation was born and a reminder that Sabah & Sarawak are part of us and not ther other part of the nation we should help bring up too speed to the rest of the nation.
Pakatan seems to be championing the call for Malaysia Day to be a public holiday. What are your thoughts?
