During the slowdown, naturally the crime rate will shoot up with petty theft and crimes increase as people get more and more desperate. Found this really cool resource which tracks crimes that take place throughout the country. This site allows users to report crimes that have taken place and its tracked via Google Maps.
I think its useful to visit the site from time to time to check if ares which you come in contact with is impacted to allow you to be wary.
