While us at the Klang Valley are whining about the horrible Internet service that we are getting and how expensive alternatives are, the folks at the island up north will be getting wireless Internet..FOR FREE! It is being rolled out in phases and eventually a large part of the island will have this access.
Congratulations Penang and luck you!
The story
Penang residents will soon be able to enjoy free wireless Internet services which will be provided by Internet-enabled service provider Hotgate Technology (M) Sdn Bhd. Hotgate chairman Michael Yang said for a start, the company, through “Penang Free Wi-Fi” project, would provide the facility at selected locations in Penang in a month.
The locations are Queensbay Mall, Macalister Road, Burmah Road, Gurney Plaza and Gurney Drive as well as Bukit Jambul, University Sains Malaysia (USM), Tanjong Bungah and Butterworth area.
“Accessibility will be extended in phases to eventually cover some 750 hotspots including those in the mainland over a 15-month period,” he said at the launch of the service here today.
The first service was launched today on the first floor and 28th floor of the popular Tun Abdul Razak Complex (Komtar) here.
Michael said public areas such as recreational parks, libraries, bus terminals, train stations and community centres would now be turned into Internet-friendly places for the public at large through the project.
With initial investment of RM10 billion, Hotgate, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hotgate Technology Inc is partnering REDtone Telecommunications Sdn Bhd in its initiative to offer Wi-Fi services on the 2.4GHz spectrum to Penang sites
