SEPANG: A man, believed to be international wildlife trader Anson Wong, has been detained at the KL International Airport following the seizure of more than 90 snakes from various species
Okay now you may have heard of him or not but just to give you a glimpse of how big this guy is , He is known as the Pablo Escobar of the wildlife trade . He has been convicted of trafficking in highly-endangered species by the US government in 2001 after a three-year probe by its Fish and Wildlife Services
Selangor police chief Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar confirmed that a man named Anson Wong was picked up at 8.50pm on Aug 26, by airport security for allegedly trying to smuggle snakes. He has been remanded until Tuesday.
“We have handed the person over to Perhilitan (Wildlife and National Parks Department) for further investigations,” he said.
This is the part that worries me, i hope that some serious action is taken and he is charged. Anson is a very huge influence in the wildlife trafficking world and killing off his movement in the circle is a huge win. We need to keep putting the authorities
The Monyet King calls for the Malaysian Government to fully enforce the International Trade in Endangered Species Act 2008. The Government must seek the maximum penalty under the Act for Anson Wong – for he is a repeat offender. The Government must revoke all permits given to him to trade in wildlife. Quoting Dino (Datuk Dr Sharma) of WWF Malaysia, “we look forward to the Wildlife Department and the Malaysian Judiciary working together to prosecute this offender to the full extent of the law”.
