Tiger Blogfest 2010

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

Calling Bloggers!

There is a initiative to get bloggers to come together to spread the love about the need to protect out tigers and to educate our brothers and sisters of this species that even sits on our coat of arms. Its important that we do our part and delirium would like to invite all of you to take part as well!I just emailed my interest and hope you will as well :)

How?

1. What is the Tiger Blogfest 2010 ?The Tiger Blogfest 2010 is a week in April where bloggers blog about the need to protect our tigers. It is an avenue for the blogging community to contribute towards protecting our national heritage. It is purely voluntary. It is not a competition, there are no prizes. It is simply bloggers expressing concern for our tigers aimed at raising awareness about the need to protect our remaining tigers.
The target is to get 100 blogs to participate.

2. When is it ?19 – 23 April 2010 (Monday – Friday). This week was chosen because it coincides with the Earth Day on 22 April.

3. What do I have to do ?Post an entry in your blog about the tiger. Tell a story, write a poem, post a technical paper, draw cartoons, compose a song, relate your personal experience – anything as long as it conveys the message about the need to protect our tigers. There is no specific format or length for your story.
You are encouraged to post as many entries as you like. It would be nice if everyone can post at least two entries, one on the 19 April and the other towards end of that week. (if you can’t, one entry is fine)You can plan and prepare ahead of time. Your first entry must be made on 19 April, preferably before 9.00 a.m.
4. LanguageYou can write in any language

5. Interested If you are interested in doing your bit for tiger and participating in this blogfest, please contact Planet of the Monyets (gbm.ere@gmail.com) to register your blog.

Earth Hour Malaysia 2010

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

Earth Hour 2010 in Malaysia was last night. It was not as hyped as 2009 which was our inaugural participation but that is totally understandable considering this is our 2nd year taking part, the country know about the event and will take part or dont.

Make your rounds on facebook and you see soo many supporting and some skeptics but that is their right. Its ok for those who think its PR stunt to feel that way, if they dont know why Earth Hour happens. For me its a very important event. Its a chance for the entire world to come together for that one hour and turn off our lights for one hour in support of our planet.

Which other event, can turn the lights off the biggest landmarks bring world leaders, make large corporations to say..We Vote Earth? Earth Hour does just that!

Our Zoo’s Real Business

Friday, March 26th, 2010

Zoos are supposed to be about conservation and helping animals. But wildlife experts say some zoos, particularly those that are privately funded, all too often engage in the illegal wildlife trade.

Al-Jazeera did a expose of what really happens behind the doors of a Zoo.

ITS A PURE SHAME! Something better happen fast to stop this!

Mobile Browsing Is Green-ER?

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

Did you know that updating your Facebook status once on your PC consumes the same amount of energy as updating it a hundred times on your phone

Nokia says that updating your Facebook status from a mobile phone consumes about 100 times less energy than if you were to do the same activity from a desktop PC.

Also, if only 100 million people were to use mobile phones instead of desktop computers to browse the Internet one hour a day, the amount of energy saved would be roughly equivalent to the annual greenhouse gas emissions of 430,000 cars.

There are about 1.4 billion Internet users worldwide and around 46% of them use Internet from both PC and their mobile phones according to this chart from DataViz.

Top Green Cities

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

Ever wondered which are the greenest cities around? Found this interesting read about which cities fill the top 5 spots for their superb effort of being green.

5. Vancouver, Canada

Vancouver has been recognized for trying to make the Winter Olympic games sustainable, but it’s their day-to-day focus that really allows this Canadian city to earn its ranking. Ninety percent of Vancouver is powered by hydroelectricity.

Wind, solar, wave and tidal energy all help ensure that this city remains green. Plus, they’ve got even greater goals for the future.

4. Malmo, Sweden

This is one international city that is focused on green space. They are well-known for their parks, but also upon sustainable urban develop. It’s one of the largest cities in Sweden and it’s truly urban. They’ve been transforming neighborhoods to make them environmentally friendly.

3. Curitiba, Brazil

This Brazilian city focuses upon maintenance using green methods, for example, parks that are trimmed by sheep. They are also known for one of the best transit systems, so commuters are encouraged to leave their cars at home.

2. Portland, Oregon, United States

Although many U.S. cities are now jumping on board, this was the first to focus upon alternative transit with light-rail and extensive bike path networks to encourage people to leave their cars in the driveway! It was also one of the first to pledge to reduce emissions and start transitioning buildings to use sustainable materials.

1. Reykjavik, Iceland (Image Above)

This city is run entirely on green power, including geothermal and hydroelectricity. Their transit system also uses hydrogen buses and it’s motivated to become Europe’s cleanest city.

Wonder when this part of the world will start taking some serious efforts to make our cities green. Its definitely is the way forward!
